Let's discuss the pros and cons.

Let's say I had the capacity to acquire a 1998 Subaru with the postal package. That's Right-hand drive. An average somewhat fringed 200k example that probably hasn't had an agreessive mile on it. The motor, while smelling a bit of oil, sounds okay.
It is equal in capacities and mechanical risks as any of its contemporaries. It is an automatic, but there's enough disorientation going on already. For the moment, at least..
I would expect a few days of touring the local junkyard to fix panels and investigate the linkage stuff. I'm not sure how the clutch pedal assembly from a LHD one would adapt. Nobody does this. Oh yeah, they do.
I own NO neon lamps and get proper wheel alignment. Bone stock with perhaps odd paint. Taxi, Harlequin, School bus. Reverse the badging to Urabus.
I have thought about this way too much.
And that $2,000 optimism has gone from the owner, so price negotiations are open. $1500 at posting, and all the 'needs work' statements from the owner is both refreshingly honest and frightening like when you're anticipating a race or something.
As a 1998 Subaru alone, they are common resources for swaps to make Brats go faster. They usually do. A simpler labyrinth of timing belts and pulleys. Just a half dozen I think. It all fits, often with just a few brackets widened and some bell housings shaved. Kinky.
Anyway, this is one way to get hold of that motor. Even if the thing is held together by spit and goes Blues Brothers on the first railroad crossing, it's a decent run for the parts.
Strangely, though, that orange spot? from gas, apparently. Clumsy. Floor? intact. Dangit, I just realized I checked the wrong side. yep. Anyway, it's got less rot on first glance than many out there. Still need to put it up on a rack. Oh me. What am i..
Converting to manual is a bolt-on, problem being most of those bolts might be in Europe or Australia. Or it just bolts in the same place and a fresh grommet for the linkage.
But. It still works, or at least has the appearance of it. I drove it. I dig it.
This is the point where measurements should be made of brain activity to determine where it should be properly routed towards more logical things.
Like a kickstarter to exploit its unicorn nature.

Right hand drive?
Buy it, rattle can it, throw on some decent wheels and a cold air intake, fix any major mechanical problems and then flip it for $6000.

every once in a while something like this pops up.
Tempting, but looks like a lot of work

Anything around here will have some rust.

Every Legacy wagon ever rusts at this spot:. I don't think it's from the gas. STI swap that puppy ASAP. FYI, they are a hoot to auto X will a full load of people:

Not that great a shape.. For that much, they will want the luggage rack. Seem to top out at $3800 Au for a perfect stock one. The ones that folks want more have those funny headlights and fit Hammond.

It is such a tempting canvas. At least nobody so far has tried to discourage me. What's Schadenfreude in Japanese?
The catch of a STi upgrade is that I've not done any of that. In fact, I'd pretty much want to learn and fix everything on this myself within physical capacity and that some things are easy and cheap to have someone with a lift wrench on it a bit. Figuring out a wonky motor would give me insight into the ways of the EJ Proudofboxer.
Check engine light is on. Even that doesn't phase me. What the?
